Research Study on the Aspirations,
Opportunities and Barriers of Young Women Completed
A research study on the aspirations,
opportunities and barriers of young women in Jammu city has recently
been completed by the Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies at the
MIER College of Education. The research was undertaken with a view
to study the aspirations of young women enrolled in various
educational institutions in Jammu city and their level of awareness
regarding availability of educational and career opportunities to
fulfill their aspirations. The study further attempted to identify
the barriers encountered by them in the family, educational,
personal and social spheres. The sample for the study consisted of
1000 young women falling in the age group of 17 to 25 years from ten
different educational institutions in Jammu city. Data was collected
with the help of a tool specially prepared for the study. The
findings of the study showed that the young women enrolled in
educational institutions in Jammu city today are more progressive,
optimistic, realistic and aspiring. The results further indicated
that the girls below 18years of age, and whose parental income is
high have highest aspirations. As far as opportunities are
concerned, more than 60% young women were found to be aware of the
educational and vocational opportunities. Regarding barriers, it was
found that a majority of the girls enrolled in educational
institutions in Jammu city are largely enjoying barrier free
atmosphere in different spheres (See Box). The study also
highlighted that relatively one-third girls belonging to different
sub-groups do require additional support, encouragement, motivation
and guidance to improve their present status thereby minimizing
difficulties, barriers and hindrances experienced by them. Important
recommendations (See Box) have also been suggested in the study for
the parents, teachers and policy planners so as to encourage the
young women to unfold their latent potentialities. |
