SPEAKER Dr. J.N. Baliya

The Center for Educational Research (CER) MIER organized a guest lecture on the theme “Grounded Theory in Qualitative Research”. The resource person was Dr. J.N. Baliya, Head Department of Educational Studies, Central University of Jammu, Jammu. In his address, Dr. Baliya traced the history of Grounded Theory and comprehensively discussed its meaning as a research method that involves forming a theory based on the gathered data as opposed to gathering data after forming a theory. In other words, it is a bottom-up approach.

Grounded theory is called 'grounded' because the theory is grounded in the data. Dr. Baliya explained steps of the Ground Theory such as observation, collection of data, organization of data, review of related literature and forming theory from the data. He also deliberated on the tools which could be used in collecting data with practical examples and discussed systemic design of the theory which includes coding system and memoing. At the end, Dr. Baliya highlighted advantages of the theory such as develops comprehensive understanding phenomena, researcher is an attached observer, and problem can be studied at different levels and the constraints include lack of training in collecting data, difficulty in managing large data and time consuming. This was followed by an active interaction session where the faculty members and students clarified their doubts and queries.
