The School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSSH) at MIER College of Education hosted an insightful and engaging talk on “Fundamental Rights and Duties in the Indian Constitution” on May 5, 2025. The event aimed to deepen students’ understanding of constitutional values and foster civic responsibility among youth. Dr. Bindu Sangra, Senior Assistant Professor, The Law School, University of Jammu, served as the resource person. Prof. Adit Gupta, Principal, MIER College of Education; Dr. Monika Bajaj, Head, School of Social Sciences and Humanities; Dr. Nishtha Rana, Head, School of Education; Dr. Bharti Tandon, Deputy Head SoE; Dr. Komal Sharma NSS Programme Officer as well as faculty members from SSSH, students of Political Science and NSS volunteers attended the program.The session began with a warm welcome address by Ms. Arzoo Sharma, a third-year student of B.A. (Hons.) Political Science. Dr. Bindu Sangra delivered a thought-provoking lecture that emphasized the foundational role of Fundamental Rights in Indian democracy and the complementary significance of Fundamental Duties in building a responsible citizenry. Through lucid explanations, real-life examples, and references to landmark constitutional judgments, she made complex legal concepts accessible and relatable. The interactive session saw enthusiastic
participation from students, who posed thoughtful questions and engaged in meaningful
dialogue, further enriching the learning experience.
In his concluding remarks, Prof. Adit Gupta highlighted the critical role of Fundamental Rights in safeguarding individual freedoms and ensuring democratic participation. He underlined the importance of such academic events in promoting constitutional literacy and inspiring youth to live by the ideals enshrined in the Constitution.
As a token of appreciation, a green planter was presented to Dr. Bindu Sangra, symbolizing gratitude and a shared commitment to sustainability and civic values. Ms. Pihu Bhardwaj, a third-year student, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging Dr. Sangra’s valuable insights and the overall impact of the session.
The talk was successfully coordinated by Dr. Nandini Puri, Programme Coordinator, Political Science and concluded on a high note, leaving students with a renewed awareness of their constitutional rights and duties and a deeper appreciation for active citizenship.
