The School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSSH), MIER College of Education (Autonomous), organized an enriching field visit to Akhnoor for the History (Minor) students of FYUP Semesters III and V (Sessions 2023β27 and 2024β28) as part of their academic curriculum.
Around 40 students actively participated in this educational excursion designed to promote experiential learning beyond the classroom. The visit was coordinated and escorted by Mr. Jarnail Singh, Assistant Professor in History, and Mrs. Kajal Badyal, Assistant Professor in Political Science.
During the visit, students explored several historically significant sites in Akhnoor, including Geo Pota Ghat, where Maharaja Gulab Singh was coronated; the ancient Pandav Gufa; the majestic Akhnoor Fort; and Ambaran, a prominent Buddhist archaeological site.
Mr. Jarnail Singh provided detailed historical, cultural, and archaeological insights at each location, enabling students to meaningfully connect theory with real-world historical heritage.
The field visit offered students a deeper appreciation of the rich historical legacy of Jammu and highlighted the value of integrating field-based pedagogy into higher education for holistic learning.
Prof. Adit Gupta, Principal, MIER College of Education, appreciated the initiative, stating:
βAt MIER College, we firmly believe that education must extend beyond textbooks to engage learners with their cultural roots and lived environments. Field-based learning experiences such as the Akhnoor visit play a crucial role in developing analytical understanding, critical thinking, and a deeper sense of connection with our regional heritage.β
