The Smt. Shanti Gupta Centre for Women’s Studies (SSGCWS), MIER College of Education, in collaboration with Model Academy School, organised a one-day Adolescent Education Programme for Class VIII students on the theme “Body Image and Self-Worth in the Age of Social Media: Promoting Positivity, Healthy Habits and Gender Sensitivity among Adolescents.” The programme aimed to raise awareness among adolescents about the psychological and social challenges of growing up in a digitally mediated world.
Ms. Upasana Moten, Assistant Professor at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSSH), MIER College of Education (Autonomous), served as the resource person. The programme was attended by Prof. Nishta Rana, Head of the School of Education; Dr. Monika Bajaj, Head of SSSH; faculty members from MIER College and Model Academy School, along with students of Class 8 at Model Academy.
During the session, Ms. Moten highlighted how social media platforms often create unrealistic standards of beauty and success, which can negatively affect adolescents’ self-esteem, body image, and mental well-being. She explained that adolescence is a vital developmental stage characterised by identity formation, peer comparison, and heightened sensitivity to external validation. The resource person emphasised the importance of fostering self-acceptance, digital literacy, and critical engagement with social media content to safeguard one’s emotional health. The session also focused on healthy habits, including balanced nutrition, physical activity, mindful screen use, and positive self-talk, as essential components of overall well-being. The interactive session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer segment, where students openly shared their concerns and reflections.
Prof. Adit Gupta, Director and Principal of MIER College of Education, valued the collaborative efforts of the Centre for Women’s Studies and Model Academy School. He highlighted that developing self-worth, emotional resilience, and gender sensitivity are vital life skills that enable young people to face adolescence with confidence and responsibility.
The programme was skillfully led by Ms. Aiyza Chib, Gender Champion, while Ms. Sachinda Mahajan and Ms. Purvi Gupta, also Gender Champions, introduced the resource person and delivered the formal vote of thanks. The event was organised under the supervision of Dr. Bharti Tandon, Convener of the Centre for Women’s Studies, and Dr. Pramod Srivastava, Principal of the Model Academy School.
